Seven Treasures Braised Pork
Seven Treasures Braised Pork
In the ancient town of Qibao, located in the southwestern suburbs of Shanghai, there is a north-south Ming and Qing dynasty old street lined with “old-style shops” featuring vermilion panel doors. The taverns and teahouses are furnished with traditional eight-immortal tables, long benches, long-spout brass kettles, and square bamboo chopsticks. Famous local snacks well known to old Shanghainese, such as square cakes, aged liquor, and braised pork, are displayed abundantly on the shelves. Other newer offerings like Beijing tanghulu (candied hawthorn) and Old Street glutinous rice balls are also quite good.
The Seven Treasures Braised Pork here is made quite uniquely. Making the braised pork in a distillery gives it a bit of an “advantage of proximity” feel. This braised pork is said to be marinated using a secret recipe, with a perfect balance of sweet and salty flavors, bursting with the aroma of both wine and meat. Packaged in these small jars, the braised pork can be steamed for just 20 minutes at home and is ready to eat—extremely convenient.
