Bixia Flat Peach
Liudian Town is situated in the northwest of Pinggu District, belonging to a semi-mountainous area. The town covers a total area of 53,000 mu, including 23,000 mu of mountainous land. It comprises 14 administrative villages with a total population of 9,836. The region is rich in water resources, with the Ru River flowing through the entire town. Its abundant natural resources provide Liudian Town with unique material conditions for developing high-quality fruit production. In recent years, the town’s Party committee and government have led officials and residents to fully leverage these resource advantages, develop premium agriculture and eco-agriculture, and cultivate a fruit industry centered around flat peaches, leading the entire population toward prosperity.
Liudian Town is renowned for its Bixia Flat Peaches, a variety that originated from the western hills of Liudian. The name comes from the ancient Bixia Yuanjun Temple in the town, which has a history of over a thousand years. Legend has it that the flat peaches were a gift from the Goddess, hence the name “Bixia” (Goddess’ Gift) Flat Peach. These spiritually significant peaches, through the efforts of scientific experts and the application of advanced cultivation techniques, have been developed into a premium variety. During the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Bixia Flat Peaches were served as a premium fruit at Tiananmen Square to national leaders and distinguished guests, turning a heavenly legend into reality. As a result, Liudian has earned the reputation of being the “Hometown of Flat Peaches” in North China.
From the ancient myth of the Heavenly Peach Banquet to the modern reality of Bixia Flat Peaches from Liujia Shop Town in Pinggu District, Beijing, frequently gracing national banquets, this blend of legend and reality once again highlights the wisdom and hard work of the people of Liujia Shop.
In response to market demands, they have actively adjusted their industrial structure, relied on science and technology, produced premium products, and achieved substantial economic benefits. The fruit industry, centered around Bixia Flat Peaches, has become a leading sector in the town and a primary source of income for farmers. Local farmers have built standardized flat peach orchards, produced high-quality premium peaches, and reaped great rewards, making the product a nationally renowned brand. Although the Bixia Flat Peach has been grown in Liujia Shop for many years, in the past, the fruits were unusually small, unattractive in color, and poor in taste. Sales were difficult, prices were low, and farmers’ yields were meager. Now, with guidance from county fruit experts, farmers are producing premium peaches using scientific methods. Eleven new technologies have been applied, including the stubble pruning method for thinning buds, flowers, and fruits, pheromone-based pest forecasting, computer-formulated fertilization, and fruit bagging. Eleven new varieties have also been introduced and cultivated. The town has widely attracted social investment to renovate old, mixed, and inferior orchards, expanding the area of premium peach orchards. Cement roads and water-saving pipelines have been extended directly to the orchards, solving major production challenges and bringing joy to farmers. Scientific pruning methods have been widely adopted, and techniques such as bud, flower, and fruit thinning have resulted in vigorous growth—peaches now average 225 grams each, with the largest reaching 468 grams. In the past, peaches were sold by the basket; now, they are weighed individually. Farmyard manure has replaced chemical fertilizer, reducing costs for farmers while ensuring the peaches are pollution-free, non-toxic, and safe—making them green foods. Especially notable is the new “fruit bagging” technique, which protects the peaches on the tree from fruit-setting to maturity, shielding them from pests, diseases, and hail. The result is large, well-shaped, brightly colored peaches that have become the most trusted and satisfying green food for consumers.
Every year when the Bixia Flat Peaches ripen, vehicles of all sizes flock to orchards across the town, transporting boxes of premium green peaches to domestic and international markets such as Russia, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Merchants praise Liujia Shop Town as the “Number One Flat Peach Town in the World.” Even more astonishing is that since the 50th National Day Celebration in 1999, Bixia Flat Peaches have appeared on Tiananmen Square as premium fruits at state banquets, becoming the “sacred peaches” and “immortal peaches” enjoyed by heads of state and distinguished guests from around the world.
