Hei Ken 290 Red Adzuki Beans
The 290 Farm is situated in the delta where the Heilongjiang and Songhua Rivers meet. Historical evidence shows that this area was home to the cultural remains of the Han Dynasty’s Yilou people, dating back about 2,000 years, referred to as the Wanyan River Culture. It was also a habitat for the Jurchen people, where Jin Dynasty ruins have been found, yielding over 300 cultural relics such as pottery, porcelain, gold, silver, and jade. The region boasts abundant natural resources, with more than 60 common fish species, and its vast wetlands serve as a paradise for wild birds, often hosting rare species like red-crowned cranes, grey cranes, and swans. As the saying goes, “Beat a roe deer with a stick, scoop fish with a ladle, and pheasants fly right into your cooking pot.” The 290 Farm was established in July 1955 by over 1,700 professional officers from the Fifth Regiment (formerly Regiment No. 290) of the Second Agricultural Construction Division of the People’s Liberation Army. After surveying and exploring the wilderness of the Suidong area north of the Songhua River, they reclaimed and developed the land. Later, urban youth and youths supporting border areas also joined the pioneering efforts. Through 60 years of gradual development, it has grown into a large-scale modern farm with the scale of a small town.
