Manchurian ash is an ancient relic plant. Although its distribution area is relatively wide, it mostly grows sporadically. The wood is tough and has a beautiful grain, making it an excellent material for furniture. Due to over-harvesting, its numbers have been declining, and large trees are now rarely seen.

It is a deciduous large tree that can grow up to 30 meters tall, with a breast height diameter of over 1 meter. The bark is gray, smooth on young trees, and develops thick and thin longitudinal fissures as it matures. The twigs are slightly quadrangular, hairless, and have lenticels. The trees are widely distributed in the Changbai Mountains and the Lesser Khingan Mountains. Typically, the trunks are tall and straight, reaching heights of 25–30 meters or more, with diameters of 40–60 centimeters. The largest specimens can exceed 35 meters in height and over 1 meter in diameter. It is considered premium timber for furniture making.
