Fangzheng Root Carving
Fangzheng root carving takes the natural forms and deformed shapes of tree roots (including tree trunks, burls, etc.) as the artistic subjects. Through conceptualization, artistic processing, and craftsmanship, it creates artistic works in the form of figures, animals, utensils, and more. Root carving is a form of plastic art that discovers natural beauty while showcasing creative craftsmanship. As the saying goes, "three parts human effort, seven parts natural formation," meaning that in root carving, most of the work should rely on the natural shape of the root material to express the artistic image, with only a small portion requiring manual modification. Therefore, root carving is also known as "the art of roots" or "root art."
