Nehe City has a long history of soybean production. No matter how environmental conditions or market situations change, soybean production has consistently remained high. From 1980 to 2010, with continuous updates in soybean varieties, the gradual adoption of new cultivation technologies, and the integrated application of comprehensive yield-increasing measures, soybean yields steadily improved. Over these 30 years, there were 15 years where the average yield per mu exceeded 150 kilograms, with an average yield of 183.3 kilograms per mu over 15 years, representing a 54.4% increase compared to the 1970s and 1980s. In 1993, the area with yields exceeding 200 kilograms per mu reached 589,500 mu, accounting for 35.6% of the total soybean planting area. In 1994, the area with yields over 200 kilograms per mu reached 658,000 mu, accounting for 38.5% of the total soybean planting area.

Nehe City is located in the northwest of Heilongjiang Province, at the northern edge of the Songnen Plain, and has 6.07 million mu of arable land. The city is part of the typical black soil region, with black soil and chernozem covering 82.7% of the total cultivated area. The soil is fertile and loose, the climate is cool, with an average annual temperature of 1°C and large diurnal temperature variations. The accumulated temperature above 10°C ranges from 2,391 to 2,410.2°C. The first frost typically occurs around September 18, and the last frost around May 16, with an average frost-free period of 115–120 days per year. Rainfall coincides with the warm season, placing it within the 3rd and 4th accumulated temperature zones of the temperate continental monsoon climate. The average annual sunshine duration is 2,749.9 hours, with annual precipitation between 450–550 mm. About 70–80% of the annual rainfall is concentrated during the peak growing season of crops in July, August, and September. The soil environment and climatic conditions are highly suitable for soybean production.

Soybeans are the most widely planted crop in Nehe City, accounting for about 60% of the total sown area. In 2010, the city’s soybean planting area was 3.802 million mu, with an average yield of 150 kilograms per mu and a profit of 218.9 yuan per mu. A national-level high-yield soybean demonstration project covered 33,400 mu, with an average yield of 206.3 kilograms per mu; the demonstration area spanned 500,000 mu, averaging 175.9 kilograms per mu; and the radiation area covered 800,000 mu, averaging 160.2 kilograms per mu. The project resulted in a total increase of 22.057 million kilograms of soybeans and an overall revenue increase of 80.68 million yuan.

In 2012, “Nehe Soybeans” was recognized by the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce as a China National Geographical Indication Certification Trademark.
