Changmi Red Seedless Watermelon
The Changmi Red Seedless Watermelon is a high-quality new variety of watermelon carefully developed under the guidance of watermelon experts such as Mr. Zou Zushen from the Crop Germplasm Resources Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, through years of hybridization experiments conducted by the Watermelon Group of the Science and Technology Extension Station in Changping County.
This variety of watermelon is primarily cultivated in Nanshao Township, Cuicun Township, and Changping Town in Changping County. It has a high sugar content, generally exceeding 10%, and can reach up to 13–14%. It contains few seeds, making it convenient to eat, with an average of about 60 seeds per fruit—just one-tenth the number found in ordinary watermelons. It also boasts strong disease resistance, especially against Fusarium wilt. The fruit stores and transports well, and when harvested at the right time, it can be kept indoors for over 15 days. The rind is tough and resistant to cracking. It is a popular fruit in the capital’s markets.
The Changmi Red Seedless Watermelon is a mid-season variety. Its seedling stage grows slowly and requires relatively high temperatures, while its mid-to-late growth stages are vigorous. It takes approximately 33 days from flowering to maturity. The fruit is round, with a green rind, and weighs an average of 3.5 kilograms, with a maximum of up to 9 kilograms. The rind is 1.5 centimeters thick, and the flesh is bright red, crisp, sweet, juicy, and not hollow.
The cultivation areas of the Changmi Red Seedless Watermelon have suitable natural, social, and economic conditions. Located in the foothills with numerous seasonal rivers, the area is traversed by the Beijing-Miyun Water Diversion Canal. The groundwater supply is abundant, with good water quality and no pollution. The soil is of good quality, mostly light loam or sandy loam. As part of the foothill warm zone, the area enjoys ample sunlight and a mild climate, all of which are highly favorable for watermelon production. The yield of this variety is relatively high, typically exceeding 2,000 kilograms per mu, and can reach up to 3,000 kilograms.
