Free-range chicken eggs are relatively small in size, but not all small eggs are free-range. Advances in modern technology have enabled the breeding of chicken varieties that lay eggs of varying sizes. Egg weight is largely influenced by genetics, and different breeds produce eggs of different weights. Be cautious when making your selection. The free-range and native chicken eggs produced at countryside guesthouses in Huairou are raised naturally, are hormone-free, pollution-free, and are genuine green eggs.

It’s often said that “finding fault where there is none” means deliberately nitpicking, but as people pay more attention to health and increasingly seek out green, contaminant-free products, some consumers have become particularly choosy when buying eggs, showing a strong preference for unpolluted, highly nutritious free-range chicken eggs. This health-driven demand has stimulated market supply. Nowadays, supermarkets and farmers' markets are flooded with free-range chicken eggs labeled as “green food,” but the quality varies greatly, including many “fake eggs” and “water-injected eggs.”

So what exactly qualifies as a free-range chicken egg? And in what kind of environment are they produced? Then take a trip to Zanhuang County, one of the top producers of free-range chicken eggs.

Zanhuang is located in the southwest of Shijiazhuang City and boasts vast mountainous areas, with 690,000 mu of suitable barren hills. In recent years, to achieve benign ecological development, the county has implemented mountain closure and afforestation policies, moving all cattle and sheep down to enclosed pastures, while encouraging the movement of free-range chickens — which have minimal ecological impact — up the mountains. The county, led by its Poverty Alleviation Office, registered the “Xiao Shanzhuang” trademark for local free-range chicken eggs, established a Chicken Raising Association, and set up a Natural Agricultural Products Development Co., Ltd. Today, the county has a total of 3 million free-range chickens, providing an average annual income increase of 1,140 yuan for 11,000 farming households. These once unremarkable little free-range chickens have grown into a major industry.

“Because we have little industry here, our soil, climate, and water quality remain in good condition. The locals also have a long tradition of raising chickens, making this a natural place for producing free-range chicken eggs,” said Liang Bianjin, who is both the head of the county’s Chicken Raising Association and the general manager of the Natural Agricultural Products Development Co., Ltd. He explained that what most people refer to as free-range chicken eggs are often just eggs laid by chickens raised in villagers’ backyards. True free-range chicken eggs, like those produced here, come from chickens that roam the hillsides year-round, mainly feeding on tender wild plant leaves, grass seeds, and insects. Aside from supplementing their diet with some basic grains and specific feed during winter and spring when food is scarce, these chickens are not given any feed containing hormones, additives, coloring agents, or excessive antibiotics.
