Huairou Almonds
Almonds are a healthy food: large almonds are rich in protein and calcium, which are beneficial for growth. Many vegetarians habitually use almonds as snacks and as a nutritious ingredient in dishes. Evidence shows that almonds can supplement protein and important minerals such as iron, zinc, and vitamin E. Almonds have energy-boosting properties and are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E, both of which are very helpful in controlling or even reducing blood cholesterol levels and possess antioxidant functions, thus being highly beneficial for preventing heart health issues and diabetes.
Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, Director of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at Tufts University in the United States, presented one of his research findings at the “Academic Symposium on Bioactive Substances” held in Beijing. The study showed that antioxidants in almond skins and vitamin E in almonds can produce a synergistic effect.
Researchers found that almond skins contain an antioxidant called flavonoids, which are also present in wine, tea, fruits, and vegetables. As antioxidants, flavonoids protect human cells and reduce the oxidative attack on low-density lipoprotein (i.e., “bad cholesterol”).
Scientists have currently analyzed and identified over 20 types of flavonoids, and a unique group of flavonoid compounds has been found in almonds. Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg said, “Blood tests show that eating almonds with their skins significantly increases the levels of flavonoids and vitamin E in the human body.” The research results also indicate that a combination diet composed of heart-healthy foods such as almonds, soybeans, viscous fiber, and plant sterols can significantly lower cholesterol levels, with effects comparable to those of statin drugs used to treat cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Huo Junsheng, Director of the Food Science and Technology Office at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that vitamin E and flavonoids play a significant role in resisting aging and promoting heart health. Whether it’s the synergistic effect of flavonoids in the almond skin or the synergistic effect of almonds in a combination diet, both demonstrate the strong efficacy of vitamin E and flavonoids in almonds.
