Beizhai Red Apricots
Beizhai Red Apricots are a protected geographical indication product.
Beizhai Red Apricots are produced in Beizhai Village, Nandulehe Town, Pinggu District. Thanks to the region’s unique geographical location, soil conditions, and climate, the "Beizhai Red Apricot" has developed its unique qualities. It is known for eight main characteristics: first, the fruits are large and round, with an average weight of 40 grams per fruit and a maximum of up to 110 grams; second, they have a bright and attractive color, yellow with a red blush; third, they have thin skins, thick flesh, and small pits; fourth, they are delicious, juicy, sweet and tangy, with a sugar content of 12%–16.5%; fifth, they are pleasant to eat fresh without upsetting the stomach, leaving a lingering fragrance afterward; sixth, the dried kernels have sweet and crispy apricot seeds; seventh, they are highly nutritious, containing various nutrients such as vitamin C, carotene, fructose, fruit acid, protein, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium; eighth, they are resistant to storage and transport, remaining fresh for about 20 days at room temperature and not peeling during long-distance shipping. As early as 1982, they were recognized as a famous, special, and high-quality product by the Beijing Fruit Appraisal Association, and in 1995, they obtained the "Green Food" certification issued by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Beizhai Red Apricot is a variety cultivated by the people of Beizhai themselves. Around the 1950s, local villagers first discovered that one or two apricot trees produced particularly delicious fruit, which they described as the result of a “mutation” in wild apricots. The villagers then grafted these trees, expanding from just one or two to tens of thousands of acres. Interestingly, if Beizhai Red Apricot trees are transplanted outside the mountain valley for cultivation, their flavor changes.
