Purple Sea Urchin
The purple sea urchin, commonly known as "ciguozi," is primarily produced in Dalian, China, accounting for over 95% of the national output. It has a spherical body, typically 6–8 cm in diameter and 3–5 cm in height. Its large spines are hard, pointed, and dark purple, and it lives among rocks, seaweed, or crevices in the intertidal zone. The reproductive glands of the purple sea urchin are extremely nutritious, not only possessing high economic value but also medicinal benefits, serving as an effective remedy for preventing cardiovascular diseases and other illnesses. A substance called "ponerinin" can be extracted from it, which inhibits the growth of cancer cells. (Dalian)
