According to *Supplement to Compendium of Materia Medica*, “The sea cucumbers produced in Liaodong are blackish-brown in color, with tender flesh and many spines. They are called Liaodong sea cucumbers or simply sea cucumbers, and are of excellent quality. Their medicinal properties are sweet and warm, non-toxic, and they are known to nourish kidney yin, generate blood circulation, and treat dysentery and ulcers.” Due to their warming and tonic medicinal properties, which rival those of ginseng, they are named “sea ginseng,” or sea cucumber.
