  Red Fuji apples are the dominant fruit in Liaoning Province. The city’s apple orchards cover an area of 76,000 hectares, with a production of 809,000 tons, accounting for 85.4% of the total fruit-growing area and 84.8% of the total fruit yield. Wafangdian City is a national "apple production base." The apples are large, beautifully shaped, brightly colored, and delicious, making them highly favored. Fifteen samples have been rated as national high-quality apples. The Liaoning Wafangdian Red Fuji Apple Production Base is located in the southwestern mountainous area of Wafangdian City, mainly producing Red Fuji apples, supplemented by Jonagold and Guoguang varieties. Both bagged and non-bagged apples are available. The apples feature good color, large size, uniformity, plumpness, and juiciness.

  Geographic Scope

  Wafangdian City is located in the central-western part of the Liaodong Peninsula, between 39°20′N to 40°07′N latitude and 121°13′E to 122°16′E longitude. It borders Pulandian City to the east, the Bohai Sea to the west, faces Jinzhou District across the sea to the south, and adjoins Gaizhou City to the north. The urban area is 292 kilometers north of Shenyang and 104 kilometers south of Dalian. The city covers a total area of 3,826.57 square kilometers and administers 9 subdistricts (Wenlan Subdistrict, Gongji Subdistrict, Tiedong Subdistrict, Lingdong Subdistrict, Zhuhua Subdistrict, Gangdian Subdistrict, Xinhua Subdistrict, Taiyang Subdistrict, Jiulong Subdistrict), 11 towns (Fuzhou Town, Songshu Town, Delisi Town, Wanjieling Town, Xutun Town, Yongning Town, Xietun Town, Laohutun Town, Hongyanhe Town, Liguan Town, Xianyüwan Town), 6 townships (Tucheng Township, Yandian Township, Xiyang Township, Paoia Township, Tuoshan Township, Zhaotun Township), 2 ethnic townships (Yangjia Manchu Ethnic Township, Santai Manchu Ethnic Township), and 4 new development areas (Dalian Wafangdian Coastal Economic Zone, Dalian Wafangdian Taipingwan Port Economic Zone, Dalian Wafangdian Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Circular Economy Zone, Dalian Longmen Tourist Resort). According to the "Regulations on Drawing Production Area Distribution Maps for Geographical Indication Agricultural Products" and the unique environmental conditions that shape the distinctive qualities of Wafangdian Red Fuji apples, the suitable growing area is primarily located between 39°20′N to 40°07′N latitude and 121°13′E to 122°16′E longitude. The defined boundary extends: east to Mutun in Wanjieling Town, west to Jingkou in Xietun Town, south to Shanqiantun in Xietun Town, and north to Kuangdongshan in Liguan Town. The total apple orchard area in Wafangdian City is 236,000 mu, with a yield of 472,000 tons.

  Product Quality Characteristics

  This section mainly describes the unique quality characteristics of the registered product and the quality and safety standards followed, including: (1) External Sensory Characteristics: Red Fuji apples are large fruits, with an average single fruit weight of 180–300 grams and a maximum weight of over 400 grams. The fruit is mostly flat-round, with a fruit shape index of around 0.8, and a few are nearly round. The fruit stem is relatively thin, and some have fleshy protrusions at the base. The stem cavity is relatively wide, medium-deep, and gently sloped. The calyx cavity is medium-deep, wide, and gently sloped. The skin is smooth and glossy, medium-thick and tough, with moderate waxiness. Mature fruits have a light yellow base color with dark red or bright red blush or streaks. The lenticels are round, quite visible, medium-large, and dense; those on the sunny side are yellow-white, while those on the shaded side are yellow. (2) Internal Quality Indicators: The flesh is yellow-white, dense, crisp, and juicy. It has a well-balanced sweet and sour taste, a rich aroma, and is of premium quality. The soluble solids content is 15.3%–16.0%, acidity is 0.2%–0.4%, and fruit firmness is 8.60–10.89 kg/cm². The apples are highly resistant to storage and transport, and can be kept until April or May of the following year. After storage, the flesh does not become mealy, the flavor changes little, weight loss is minimal, and disease incidence is low. (3) Safety Requirements: Wafangdian Red Fuji apples must be produced and managed strictly in accordance with the "Wafangdian Green Red Fuji Standardized Production Technical Regulations." Agricultural inputs should be used rationally, and the use of highly toxic pesticides banned by the state is strictly prohibited. The pesticide safety interval must be strictly observed, and only apples that pass pesticide residue testing are allowed on the market.
