The straw weaving industry in Suizhong County has a long history and enjoys a high reputation both domestically and internationally. As early as 300 years ago, people began using sorghum stalks to weave straw hats in various patterns such as four-line motifs, three-flower designs, and swastika patterns. These hats were exquisitely crafted, affordable, and practical, serving as everyday items for both urban and rural residents to shield themselves from sun and rain. In addition, bulrush was used to make mats, bags, and fans. With continuous advancements in weaving techniques and broader use of raw materials, in November 1982, Xiaozhuangzi Manchu Township in Suizhong County introduced a new straw weaving technique from Huang County, Shandong Province, using corn husks (the outer layer of corn ears) as raw material. There are three forms of corn husk straw weaving: flat weaving, loop weaving, and braid weaving. The craftsmanship is delicate, innovative, and aesthetically pleasing. Products woven include various car seat cushions, folding chair pads, round table mats, sofa cushions, tea table mats, handbags, wallets, paper baskets, door curtains, carpets, jewelry boxes, and a wide range of basket and container types. Seventy-seven samples were showcased at the Guangzhou Trade Fair, with 14 varieties entering the international market. Foreign buyers eagerly placed orders, generating valuable foreign exchange for the country. Suizhong straw weaving benefits from abundant raw materials and low production costs. A single mu of corn can yield 30 kilograms of corn husks, enough to make 30 sets of car seat cushions. With each set priced at 4 yuan, this adds 120 yuan in income. Since January 1983, straw weaving products from Xiaozhuangzi Manchu Township began to be exported, initially shipping 400 sets and 200 pieces to Japan, earning an income of 27.6 million yuan. By June 1985, the township's straw weaving production had generated a net income of over 70,000 yuan.
