In 2000, after extensive expert evaluation and strong support from various levels of government, Beidianzi Township successfully introduced and trial-planted 30 acres of Canada’s “Vidal” ice wine grapes. By 2003, large-scale promotion across the township had begun. To date, the township has planted over 10,000 acres of ice wine grapes, making the ice grape industry the leading “one village, one product” specialty of the area.

Aiming to establish a rural industrial development model of “leading enterprise + base + farmers + standards,” Beidianzi Township has built a standardized wine grape planting base covering 11,500 acres. The entire base is managed under standardized cultivation practices, with detailed standards applied to every step of the process. Additionally, the township hired experts from the Liaoning Academy of Fruit Science to conduct comprehensive research on ice grape cultivation and management techniques as a scientific research project, achieving major breakthroughs in breeding, planting, and management. These efforts not only enhanced the technological cultivation and management skills of local growers but also led to the creation of theoretical guides such as “Ecological Planting Techniques for Ice Wine Grapes” and “Management Technical Regulations for Ice Wine Grapes.” In 2004, the ice grape project was listed by the Ministry of Agriculture as one of the 12 national new and superior seedling breeding base projects. The Beidianzi Township ice grape production base was designated by the National Standards Committee as an ecological planting demonstration zone for ice grapes. In 2006, the township was recognized by Liaoning Province as a modern agricultural demonstration base. Meanwhile, the production technology of “Vidal Ice Wine” and its phenolic substances successfully passed the evaluation of the National Standards Committee, which described them as: domestically pioneering and internationally leading, marking the realization of independent intellectual property rights in China’s ice wine production. Beidianzi Township has thus become the true “World Golden Ice Valley” and the “Home of Chinese Ice Wine.”
