They are known to have special effects such as nourishing essence and marrow, enriching blood and boosting yang, strengthening the waist and kidneys, and fortifying tendons and bones. In 2010, after review by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China, it was decided to implement national geographical indication product protection for "Xifeng Deer Antler."
Historical Background
Xifeng has a long history and is full of charm. Since ancient times, various ethnic groups have lived and thrived here. In 1619 AD, Nurhaci, the founding emperor of the Qing Dynasty, after defeating the Yehe tribe, designated this area as an imperial hunting ground. It is said that Emperor Kangxi once hunted here, shot a deer, which then fled with the arrow still in it. Emperor Kangxi blurted out, "This is an escaping deer!" Hence, the place came to be known as "Taolu" (escaping deer). In 1896, the ban on settlement was lifted and land cultivation was promoted. In 1902, the county was officially established. It was named "Xifeng" because the river flows westward and the area is rich in natural resources. Over-hunting eventually led to a sharp decline in the deer population. Local authorities then assigned residents to raise deer domestically, releasing them during imperial hunts to supply game for the royal hunt. This practice was passed down and eventually developed into an industry in Xifeng County.
