a perennial herbaceous plant, used medicinally for its roots, with the active medicinal component being gentiopicroside. Qingyuan Gentian from Qingyuan Manchu Autonomous County in Liaoning Province is a local specialty medicinal herb of high quality, with gentiopicroside content 5–9 times higher than the pharmacopoeia standards for medicinal use. In addition to growing wild in large quantities, artificial cultivation in enclosed fields began as early as the late 20th century. By the early 21st century, over 3,000 people had mastered relatively skilled cultivation techniques. Gentian has become a pillar variety in Qingyuan’s traditional Chinese medicinal herb cultivation. The annual output can reach 1,000 tons, accounting for 80% of the national market. It has successively won the Silver Award at the 1995 China Agricultural Expo, the Gold Award at the 2000 Liaoning Provincial Medicinal Herb Variety Expo, the 2002 Liaoning Agricultural Achievements and Quality Agricultural Products Award, and the 2003 "Agricultural Science and Technology Industrialization Demonstration Unit Award" at the 6th China Beijing International Fair. In December 2008, after review by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, it was decided to implement national geographical indication product protection for Qingyuan Gentian.
