Zhalantun Hazelnuts

Zhalantun Hazelnuts are a product with geographical indication.

Primarily produced in the eastern part of Zhalantun City and the Pei Mountain area, with an annual output of about 800,000 kilograms, hazelnuts were once an export commodity that generated foreign exchange. Hazelnuts are highly nutritious and versatile. Eaten raw or roasted, they are crisp, delicious, and richly aromatic, making them a beloved snack and a premium local specialty for gifting to family and friends. Every part of the hazelnut is valuable: the kernel can be used as a filling for pastries, the shell can be made into activated carbon, the husk and leaves contain tannins that can be extracted for tanning, the leaves can be used as animal feed, and the roots can be used in textiles.

Zhalantun Hazelnuts are a "natural, pollution-free, high-nutrition" green food. Coupled with the prestigious label of "National Geographical Indication Product," these hazelnuts have gained fame both domestically and internationally. Buyers from cities and provinces such as Beijing, Tianjin, Guangdong, and Shandong come in large numbers to purchase them. Especially the "hazelnut droplets," referred to by experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences as "hand-clapped water-draining" due to their unique texture, are extremely popular — many out-of-town merchants are even willing to pay double the price to snap them up. Before every Spring Festival, Zhalantun Hazelnuts are given as valuable gifts to family and friends.

Nowadays, these unassuming wild little nuts known as "Zhalantun Hazelnuts" have become an important part of the green food products that Zhalantun is striving to develop. They also serve as a "golden nugget" helping local farmers achieve prosperity, and have turned into a "sunrise industry" with low investment, high returns, and a triple-win in "ecological, social, and economic" benefits.
