Fruits and Melons
As early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Xia Kingdom established by the Xiongnu people developed orchards in this region. The Tang Dynasty poet Wei Zhan once praised in his poem “Seeing Lu Pan off to Lingwu”: “Orchards thrive at the foot of the Helan Mountains; the frontier land has long been famed as the Jiangnan of the north,” showing the long history of fruit cultivation here. Thanks to abundant sunshine and large diurnal temperature variations, the fruits and melons produced here have thin skins, crisp textures, and high sugar content. The main types include watermelons, cantaloupes, and muskmelons, with watermelons being particularly renowned for their quality. Among the fruits, apples, yellow-fleshed peaches, crisp pears, fragrant banana pears, long-stem pears, and jade-yellow apricots are especially prized for their excellent taste.
