Viewing the Lanterns
“Viewing the Lanterns” is a traditional folk snack and one of the specialties of Qingyang. It is usually made on the 15th day of the first lunar month each year to offer as a tribute to the “Kitchen God.” The custom originates from Emperor Ming of Han lighting lamps to pray for blessings, used to ward off evil, bring good fortune, and seek light, ultimately wishing for the health and happiness of children. After the offering, children can then eat it. It is generally shaped into various animals, such as birds, sheep heads, ox heads, fish, and qilin, all of which are animals symbolizing good fortune. Main ingredients include dough, red beans, soybeans, black beans, etc., with beans used to make the “eyeglasses.” Tools such as scissors and spoons are used to help shape the various animal forms.
