Xi'an tie-dye has a long history. As early as the Tang Dynasty, the ancient capital of Chang’an saw widespread popularity of tie-dyeing. Members of the imperial family and nobility vied to purchase these textiles, which featured a variety of patterns such as butterflies, plum blossoms, daffodils, and fish. The tie-dyeing techniques had reached a remarkably high level. By the 1980s, Xi'an’s tie-dyeing artisans built upon traditional folk techniques, while also incorporating foreign dyeing methods. They developed various tying, binding, stitching, and folding techniques, using a range of dyes and coloring approaches to bring new vibrancy to this ancient folk art. Products included tablecloths, curtains, scarves, headbands, bags, and clothing—all retaining an original, rustic elegance with distinctive styles that won high praise and affection from both domestic and international tourists. Additionally, tie-dye items produced by local folk artisans in the Guanzhong region using traditional, homemade methods are also very popular among visitors. These products feature dark blue backgrounds adorned with a variety of white floral and pattern designs, highlighting their simple, classic charm.
