A fabric dyeing technique. Patterns are first drawn on cloth with liquid wax, and then the cloth is dyed and the wax is removed. It is a traditional folk printing and dyeing craft in China. Melted yellow wax is used to draw patterns on white cloth, and after dyeing, the wax is boiled off, leaving behind white patterns. It originated in the Han Dynasty and flourished in the Tang Dynasty.

Batik (batik) is an ancient folk traditional textile printing and dyeing handicraft in China. Batik, known in ancient times as “la,” is one of China’s three major ancient printing techniques, alongside tie-dyeing (jiaoxie) and stencil dyeing (jiayi). Batik involves using a wax knife to dip melted wax and draw floral designs on cloth, which is then dyed with indigo. After dyeing, the wax is removed, revealing various blue-background-white-flower or white-background-blue-flower patterns. Meanwhile, during the dyeing process, the wax used as a resist naturally cracks, creating unique “ice patterns” on the fabric that add special charm. Due to its rich patterns, elegant color tones, distinctive style, and its use in making clothing and various daily-life items, batik presents a simple yet refined, fresh and pleasing aesthetic with strong ethnic characteristics.
