Yuanjiang Areca Nuts

During the Kangxi era, Zhang Lücheng, the magistrate of Yuanjiang Prefecture, composed five poems titled *Miscellaneous Records of Yuanjiang*, describing the local customs and way of life. One line reads: “Ten areca trees are the wealth of an average household; two paddies yield ample grain.”

His own annotation explains: “When each areca tree matures, it can fetch the value of one gold piece. The rice fields can yield two to three harvests per year. By the early Qing dynasty, cultivating areca had already become an important source of income for the locals, and owning ten areca trees was equivalent to the property of an average household. In Yuanjiang, areca has long been an important theme among poets and scholars, giving rise to numerous 'Areca Songs' and 'Areca Odes.'

The Yuanjiang Basin enjoys a hot climate with no frost throughout the year, providing ideal conditions for areca cultivation. The early Qing-era *Yuanjiang Prefecture Annals* contain brief records of areca planting, which was already renowned in southern Yunnan at the time. Fresh areca nuts are green fruits, split open and threaded with rattan strips. Dried nuts are called “shell areca,” and after removing the husk and drying them, they are known as “areca kernels.” The medicinal name for areca is “areca peel,” and it is a very common hospitality food among the people of Yuanjiang. Hence, historical records mention that the nut earned its name from the polite title “Areca Gentleman” given to guests. Strings of “areca pendants” are displayed during festivals and celebrations at home. “Offering (or gifting) areca” is a unique way for young men and women to express affection and betrothal. Among the Dai and Bai ethnic groups in Yuanjiang, people of all ages have the habit of chewing areca. They place it in their mouths and chew it slowly, gradually turning the color deep red, staining the lips like lip rouge and flushing their cheeks with waves of red, as if drunk on wine.
