Yuanjiang's hot valley lies in a low-altitude, dry, and hot river valley region, abundant in sunlight, warmth, water, and soil resources. The area has historically maintained an annual average temperature of 23.8°C and enjoys frost-free conditions year-round, offering uniquely favorable natural climatic conditions and earning the reputation of a “natural greenhouse.”
Mangoes are tropical fruit trees that require relatively high growth temperatures, with an annual average temperature of 20–30°C being ideal for their cultivation. The optimal growing conditions for mangoes align perfectly with Yuanjiang County’s natural climate. As a result, Yuanjiang mangoes are known for their high sugar content, pure flavor, attractive appearance, and have long been praised by merchants from all over as a premium variety.
Since 1989, Yuanjiang County has actively mobilized and organized local farmers to plant mangoes, tailoring efforts to the county's unique characteristics. Over time, a comprehensive set of cultivation and management techniques has been developed. Mango cultivation has expanded year by year, with yields increasing annually. By the end of 2001, the planted area had reached 60,000 mu (approximately 4,000 hectares), with total production of around 25,000 tons, earning the county recognition as Yunnan Province’s mango base. Among the 134 varieties grown in Yuanjiang, new high-quality strains such as Tai Nong No. 1, Golden Phoenix, Shui Ying Da, and Pa La Ying Da have been introduced. Starting in 2004, the People’s Government of Yuxi City, the provincial tourism bureau, and the provincial commerce department jointly launched an annual "Golden Mango" Festival in Yuanjiang. This event has further boosted the popularity of Yuanjiang mangoes and the development of mango-related products.
