Yunxian White Flower Papaya is a geographical indication certification trademark.
Yunxian White Flower Papaya is a specialty of Yunxian County, Lincang City, Yunnan Province. Grown under the specific climate of Yunxian, this papaya features strong reproductive ability, wide adaptability, early fruiting, large size, intense aroma, high yield, thick and fine flesh without residue, and superior nutritional value compared to other papaya varieties. It is a distinctive agricultural product with deep historical roots and development history. Yunxian White Flower Papaya has been granted a national geographical indication certification trademark.
Located in the southwestern part of Yunnan Province, on the western bank of the Lancang River and the northeastern part of Lincang City, Yunxian lies between 23°56′–24°46′ north latitude and 99°43′–100°33′ east longitude. As a low-latitude region with altitudes ranging from 760 to 2,834 meters, Yunxian’s complex terrain and significant elevation differences result in distinct seasonal variations within short distances—no severe cold in winter, no intense heat in summer, and diverse microclimates. These natural conditions are highly suitable for the growth of Yunxian White Flower Papaya, making it the optimal production area and origin of white flower papaya in China. Under Yunxian’s specific climate, the papaya develops traits such as vigorous reproduction, broad adaptability, early fruiting, large size, rich aroma, high yield, thick and smooth flesh without residue, and better nutrition than other varieties. It is a specialty agricultural product with unique historical and developmental significance. All twelve townships in the county cultivate Yunxian White Flower Papaya.
White Flower Papaya-soaked wine offers three key benefits: ‘liver protection, joint flexibility, and anti-aging beauty.’ Yunnan is known as the “Kingdom of Flora and Fauna,” and White Flower Papaya thrives at high altitudes between 1,800 and 2,300 meters in southwestern Yunnan. Grown without industrial pollution, it is a naturally cultivated eco-friendly fruit.
Yunxian has a long history of papaya cultivation, primarily growing Zaopi papaya, hairy leaf papaya, and the white-flowered type found in their natural hybrids—commonly called White Flower Papaya or White Papaya—which are of exceptionally high quality. Research by institutions like the Yunnan Academy of Forestry Sciences and experts confirms that Yunxian has a wide distribution of papaya plants, abundant germplasm resources, a long cultivation history, and superior fruit quality. It is the origin and optimal habitat of papaya species and the birthplace of global White Flower Papaya.
Historical records indicate that before the Ming and Qing dynasties, local folk doctors in Yunxian used papaya-soaked wine to treat rheumatism and arthritis. By the Ming and Qing periods, White Flower Papaya was more widely documented for medicinal use. Two century-old White Flower Papaya trees still standing at Luanshi Community, Tanglishu Village Committee, Yongbao Town, Yunxian, remain fruitful, drawing frequent admiration from passersby. Since the Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee, White Flower Papaya has become a key income-generating crop for mountain farmers in Yunxian. With support from successive county governments, it has been prioritized as a specialty agricultural product. Notably, after Yunnan Maoliang Group successfully developed fermented papaya wine, the Yunxian White Flower Papaya industry saw substantial growth. By the end of 2011, the county’s planting area reached 94,281 mu (approx. 6,285 hectares), yielding 65,996.7 tons with a total output value of 45 million yuan.
Yunxian White Flower Papaya has diverse uses—edible, medicinal, and ornamental—delivering significant economic benefits. Rich in organic acids, vitamins, carotene, amino acids, pectin, flavonoids, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, manganese, and phosphorus, it offers comprehensive nutrition. In food processing, its thick, crisp, sweet-and-sour flesh makes for popular products. Medically, ripe White Flower Papaya—golden-yellow, tart, and warm in nature—helps soothe the liver and stomach, relax muscles, and dispel dampness. Its organic acids aid digestion and circulation, while flavonoids lower blood pressure, strengthen the heart, regulate arrhythmia, and benefit coronary health. Fruit acids resist radiation and assist in breaking down heavy metals, stabilizing vitamin C. The papaya also exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and anti-swelling effects. Modern studies reveal that oleanolic acid in Yunxian White Flower Papaya protects liver enzymes, inhibits bacteria, lowers lipids, and safeguards chromosomes—expanding its medical applications as a key pharmaceutical ingredient.
In 2013, the “Yunxian White Flower Papaya” was certified as a China National Geographical Indication Trademark by the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.
