Miao headdress

The Miao people mainly live in the border areas of southwestern China’s provinces. They have their own language, and their communities are primarily agricultural, supplemented by hunting. Miao embroidery, cross-stitch, brocade, batik, paper-cutting, and jewelry-making are all colorful and renowned both in China and abroad. Miao headdresses are all made of silver and come in a rich variety of styles.

Headdresses include silver horns, silver fans, silver hats, silver headscarves, silver floating hair rows, silver hairpins, silver hair sticks, silver top flowers, silver mesh chains, silver flower combs, silver earrings, silver children’s hat ornaments, and more.

  Silver horns

The silver horns are forked, and their main patterns usually depict two dragons playing with a pearl. The dragons and the pearl are embossed, standing about 1 centimeter above the base. When young women wear them, they often insert white chicken feathers at the tips of the horns. The swaying feathers make the horns appear even taller, blending majestic grandeur with an ethereal grace.

  Silver hat

The silver hat is a formal ceremonial headdress for the Miao people, consisting of numerous silver flowers, birds, butterflies, animals, and silver bells in various shapes, giving the impression of a head adorned with sparkling jewels—luxurious and elegant.

  Silver headscarf

The Miao people attach five silver hat ornaments to a headscarf with vertical red and green stripes. The central ornament is slightly larger and placed on the forehead, while the other four, which are smaller, are symmetrically attached in front of and behind the ears. All are hollow silver flowers. The scarf shimmers with silver and bursts with vibrant fabric colors, complementing each other in a distinctive way.

  Silver hairpin

Miao silver hairpins come in a great many styles, typically featuring themes of flowers, birds, and butterflies. Even when depicting flowers, variations exist in petal count—single or double layers—and arrangement—clustered or single—ranging from elaborate to simple, dense to sparse. In terms of style, some hairpins are delicate and lively, exuding elegance and spirit, while others are rustic and robust, conveying a solid and dignified feel—each with its own unique charm.
