In Moon Mountain, Rongjiang County, Guizhou Province, there is a miniature pig breed known for its tender and fragrant meat, free from any strong odor or gaminess — hence the name "Fragrant Pig." Unlike other pig breeds, the small Fragrant Pig was developed over time through close inbreeding in a specific natural environment with relatively low levels of agriculture and animal husbandry. It has a distinctive appearance: short, round, and chubby, with glossy fur.

The small Fragrant Pig is a precious breed carefully domesticated and cultivated by local Miao people from wild boars. It features thin skin, fine bones, tender meat, delicious flavor, a delicate aroma, and is not greasy. Most weigh less than 30 kilograms. It serves as premium material for roast pig and is also a valuable experimental animal, making it a unique and high-quality local breed in China.

The Fragrant Pig has a short and stocky body with entirely black fur, though some may have white lips and white extremities. Its neck is short and slender, the head is long with a flat forehead marked by deep wrinkles. The ears are small, thin, and extend sideways, with stiff ear roots. There is a pinkish ring around the eyes. The back and waist are broad and slightly concave, the belly is large and drooping, the limbs are thin and short, and the tail is long and thin, resembling a mouse tail. Purebred Fragrant Pigs often have a clear white spot on the forehead, with black coloring only on the head and tail, and no black patches on the back. The hindquarters are well-rounded, the limbs are short and slender, the front legs stand upright, and the hind legs often rest in a seated position.

A prominent characteristic of the Fragrant Pig is its small size and low body weight. To ensure the meat maintains its pure fragrance, the pigs are primarily fed green forage.
