The Xiashige Dog gets its name from being primarily bred in Xiashi Town, Guizhou Province, and is widely distributed across the Leigong Mountain area within the Miaoling Mountain Range of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The Xiashige Dog has a shiny, jade-white coat, a large head, a fierce appearance, and red eye rims, lips, nose, and tongue. It has double eyelids, a deep and round chest, a straight tail with the tip pointing upward (mouse-like tail). Highly intelligent, easy to train, loyal and obedient, it is greatly cherished by people and has unique ornamental value, often trained as a show dog. This breed has an exceptionally keen sense of smell, strong limbs, thick paw pads, appropriately curved toes, and well-spread toe gaps, enabling fast running speeds, great endurance, and explosive power. It is naturally adept at hunting, making it a well-known hunting dog breed. Ranked third among the world’s famous dogs as the “Chinese Famous Hunting Dog,” it can be trained through systematic reinforcement to become a “mini police dog.”

The Xiashige Dog has a gentle temperament and strong adaptability, making it suitable for breeding across various regions of China. They can be raised in small groups of 3–5 or larger groups of dozens, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:6. They can be kept in open pastures or confined, and small-scale breeding requires minimal labor. The Xiashige Dog has developed through extensive, free-range breeding in remote and impoverished areas, resulting in few diseases, diverse dietary habits, and a preference for various agricultural products, vegetables, animal-based foods, and kitchen or slaughterhouse leftovers. Generally, feeding one dog with 300 yuan worth of feed per year achieves scientifically sound nutrition, offering low input, high output, and strong profitability. Raising one female dog can yield an annual income of over 1,000 yuan.

Currently, there is high domestic demand for multi-functional dogs, along with increasing quality requirements. The Xiashige Dog is an ideal breed that can serve as both a companion and entertainment animal, as well as for home guarding, hunting and tracking, while also providing delicious meat. Its development prospects are very promising.
