　　On December 22, 2004, news came from the State Forestry Administration: in the third batch of China’s Famous and High-Quality Economic Forests Villages and Towns announced nationwide, Tongzi County in Guizhou Province was awarded the honorary title of “Hometown of Chinese Square Bamboo Shoots.”

　　Golden Buddha Mountain Square Bamboo, simply called Square Bamboo, belongs to the genus Chimonobambusa under the bamboo subfamily, and is native to the southwestern regions of China including Guizhou, Chongqing, and Yunnan, primarily distributed in the Dalou Mountain area. Tongzi County is located in the central section of the Dalou Mountains, which is the core natural habitat of square bamboo. As early as the late Qing Dynasty, Tongzi County already had processed dried bamboo shoots and used square bamboo for papermaking. In recent years, Tongzi County has made square bamboo a pillar industry for increasing farmers’ income in high-altitude areas, and through artificial bamboo cultivation and the transformation of existing bamboo forests, it has formed a pattern where “every mountain has bamboo, and shoots can be harvested all year round.”

　　It is understood that square bamboo is distributed across 19 towns in the county, including Shixi, Huanglian, and Chumi, covering a total area of over 300,000 mu, accounting for more than 60% of the national total area of the same type of bamboo.

　　 Hometown of Chinese Square Bamboo Shoots – Tongzi, Zunyi, Guizhou

　　The square bamboo industry in Tongzi County, Guizhou Province, has developed rapidly, and in 2005, it was honorably awarded the title of “Hometown of Chinese Square Bamboo Shoots.”

　　　　Square bamboo is distributed across 19 towns in the county, including Shixi, Huanglian, Chumi, and Yelang, covering a total area of over 300,000 mu, accounting for more than 60% of the national total area of the same type of bamboo. Among these, Shixi Town is the true origin of the world’s largest square bamboo shoot resources. The town has over 40,000 mu of native square bamboo forests, and with newly planted square bamboo in recent years, the total area is about 50,000 mu, generating an annual output value of over 20 million yuan from square bamboo shoots. To develop square bamboo shoots into an industry that increases local farmers' income, the Shixi Town Party Committee and government have actively explored development strategies. In the past two years, through scientific planning and careful management, the square bamboo industry has developed rapidly, with the total area of square bamboo shoots in the county reaching 450,000 mu, making it one of the four major industries—“square bamboo shoots, vegetables, animal husbandry, and flue-cured tobacco”—that strongly drive the county’s economic growth. Square bamboo is distributed across 19 towns in the county, including Shixi, Huanglian, and Chumi, covering a total area of over 300,000 mu, accounting for more than 60% of the national total area of the same type of bamboo. Tongzi has taken this opportunity and decided to build a bamboo industry base with a total area of 600,000 mu, mainly square bamboo, within five years starting this year, aiming to achieve an output value of 210 million yuan in the bamboo industry.
