Wild papaya is exclusively produced in Zhenning County, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. With no industrial pollution and its unique geographical location, natural climate, and temperature conditions, Zhenning nurtures this distinctive resource. In 1996, Zhenning County was designated as the “Hometown of Wild Papaya” by the Development Research Center of the State Council and other institutions.

   1. Quality Characteristics

It has a fresh fragrance, an acidulous and slightly astringent taste, large fruit size, thin peel, thick flesh, tender texture, and is non-toxic. Its functions include soothing the liver and stomach, removing dampness and combating cancer, delaying aging, reducing inflammation and bacteria, lowering blood lipids, and enhancing human immune function.

    2. Historical Origins and Human-Geographical Relationships

Wild papaya is distributed throughout Zhenning County. It is a perennial Rosaceae (shrub) plant. Historically, apart from wild growth, it was commonly planted in rural courtyards, along roadsides, embankments, and field edges. Its trees are often used for landscaping; the flowers are bright pink, bloom for a long time, and are ornamental. The fruits have many uses—they can be sliced and dried for consumption, used medicinally, placed in pickling jars to enhance and preserve pickles, or peeled, sliced, and preserved with salt or sugar before eating. Tests conducted by multiple research institutions have shown that Zhenning wild papaya contains a variety of amino acids and oleanolic acid, especially a very high level of superoxide dismutase (SOD). To date, over 45,000 acres of industrialized cultivation bases have been established, forming an initial industrial structure of “company + base + farmer.” The Zhenning Wild Papaya Development Corporation was founded in 1993 as a private enterprise dedicated to developing and producing a series of wild papaya foods. It has developed Type A and B wild papaya foods, wild papaya beverages, and wild papaya wine. The products are rich in color, aroma, taste, and nutrition, and are highly favored by consumers. In 1994 and 1995, the products were awarded the “Sixth China New Technology and New Products Expo Gold Award” and the “1995 China Famous, High-Quality, and Special Products Gold Award,” respectively. In March 1996, at the China Specialty Research and Hometown Construction Exchange Conference held in Langxi County, Anhui Province, organized by the Development Research Center of the State Council, the China Specialty Economic Development Committee, and the China Specialty Newspaper, Zhenning County was officially named the “Hometown of Chinese Wild Papaya.”

    3. Local Government Initiatives

First, before 1990, the county’s annual output of fresh wild papaya was only 100 tons. After 1991, the Tianlou Fruit Processing Factory of Zhenning No. 1 Middle School began developing wild papaya cultivation with the support of the county party committee and the county government, and it was incorporated into the county’s economic development projects. By 1997, a total investment of 8.5 million yuan had been made, with standardized cultivation of over 45,000 acres of papaya across the county, including 6,409 acres bearing fruit. Second, more than 5 million yuan was invested to build a new wild papaya beverage production line. Third, wild papaya was continued to be listed as one of the key protected species in Zhenning County’s economic development. Fourth, the company maintained an integrated approach covering planting management, fresh fruit purchasing, product development, processing, and sales, achieving an integrated industrial operation of trade, industry, and agriculture.

The production area of Zhenning Wild Papaya covers the administrative regions of 19 towns and townships in Zhenning County, Guizhou Province: Fengyi Town, Anchang Town, Ruixi Town, Xinzhou Town, Xiaoya Town, Miaotang Town, Hexi Town, Tuping Town, Liudu Town, Gelin Town, Zhongguan Town, Lejian Township, Xieba Township, Shiping Township, Banzhu Township, Fuyan Township, Bifeng Township, Yangxing Township, and Jianping Township.
