Black glutinous rice from Huishui
Black glutinous rice from Huishui is a protected geographical indication product.
Black glutinous rice, also known as "black pearl," is produced in areas such as Baijin, Bbangbang, and Yashui, where ethnic Miao and Buyi people reside in our county. The rice grains are deep purple. The "black rice" and "blood rice" recorded by Li Shizhen in the Ming Dynasty’s *Compendium of Materia Medica* refer to this very type of rice. It is highly nutritious and has significant medicinal value. Long-term consumption can nourish blood and boost energy, strengthen the brain and kidneys, regulate the uterus, and improve overall fitness. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine—taken internally for nourishment and applied externally to mend bones and promote tissue growth. Research institutes of traditional Chinese medicine have confirmed that it has therapeutic effects on hyperhidrosis, anemia, and neurasthenia.
Huishui County has a history of cultivating glutinous rice for nearly a thousand years, primarily in towns such as Bbangbang, Baijin, and Yashui. It boasts unique color, aroma, taste, and medicinal benefits, capable of nourishing blood and energy, strengthening the brain and kidneys, regulating the uterus, and improving fitness. In traditional Chinese medicine, it serves both as an internal tonic and external remedy for bone mending and tissue regeneration. Known as the “medicinal rice,” among the many black foods in Guizhou Province, it earns the title of "black pearl" due to its superior quality, rich nutrition, diverse functions, and deep purple color. Black glutinous rice wine and black glutinous rice champagne brewed from it have been awarded the titles of “Famous Liquor of Guizhou Province” and “High-Quality New Product of Guizhou Province.”
