Jian Tang Musk Melon

Jian Tang Musk Melon is a local specialty of Quanzhou. It grows in soil that is rich in rainfall, ample sunlight, and slightly reddish in composition. The musk melons from Jian Tang, Quanzhou, feature thin skins, crisp flesh, abundant sweet juice, and an intoxicatingly fragrant aroma.

  Quality Characteristics

Thanks to the region’s climate and soil, the musk melons of Jian Tang Township are sweet, crisp, and leave a lingering mellow aftertaste upon eating.

  Nutritional Benefits

The flesh can be eaten raw to quench thirst and clear internal heat, and may also help eliminate bad breath. However, the melon stem is toxic—eating it raw in excess can lead to poisoning. According to expert analysis, all varieties of musk melon are rich in malic acid, glucose, amino acids, betaine, vitamin C, and other nutrients, making them highly effective in treating infectious fevers, thirst, and similar conditions.

  Industry Development

The musk melons produced in Jian Tang Township, Quanzhou, Guangxi, are beloved in the market for their sweetness, crisp texture, and delightful aftertaste, making them a consistent bestseller both within and beyond the region. This year, the township has encouraged farmers to switch from traditional open-field cultivation to greenhouse farming, thereby extending the melons’ growing period, reducing pest infestations, and cutting down on pesticide use. The resulting melons are of higher quality, brighter in color, and fetch better prices.

Because greenhouse-grown musk melons are pollution-free and superior in quality, their price has more than doubled compared to regular melons, selling for as much as 7 yuan per jin in the market. With the same land and yield, farmers are now earning twice as much.

Farmers in Jian Tang Township are highly enthusiastic about growing musk melons. The township has now expanded cultivation to over 1,500 mu, including more than 60 mu of greenhouse melons. With greenhouses, melon quality has improved, prices have risen, fewer pesticide sprays are needed, labor is saved, costs are reduced, and incomes have doubled. We believe even more will be planted in our township in the future.
