The Du'an Goat breed has a long history. According to the "Food and Goods" section in the *Draft Chronicles of Du'an County* (Republic of China), the livestock production survey table states: "The livestock in this county includes large animals such as cattle, horses, pigs, and goats; small ones such as chickens, but goats are also raised in mountainous areas." Goats have been listed as part of the local livestock industry. Local ethnic minorities traditionally slaughter goats for ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, marriages, and other rituals. Raising goats has always been an essential part of local livelihoods and a major source of income. The Du'an Goat was developed under these natural ecological conditions through long-term selective breeding by local communities. The hide of the Du'an Goat is uniform in texture, thin yet lightweight and tough, with good elasticity and fine fibers, making it premium material for leather production and a sought-after export commodity. The meat is tender, smooth, and juicy, with sweet and flavorful fat. It is highly nutritious, and the whole goat can be prepared into over 60 dishes such as stewed goat meat, liver-wrapped goat, braised goat trotters, and crisp white-cut goat tripe. These dishes have become staples in restaurants and hotels both within and outside the region. Among them, the “Beauty and Longevity Soup,” though slightly bitter, is sweet and believed to promote longevity with regular consumption. The “Mountain Delicacy Goat Ribs” are rich but not greasy, and the “Goat Hot Pot” is truly unforgettable. Premium goat meat is also used to make cured goat through traditional smoking and roasting methods, resulting in a uniquely flavorful product that makes a great eco-friendly gift or hospitality item. In 1979, the Guangxi Regional Animal Husbandry Bureau organized surveys and measurements of the Du'an Goat. In 1983, it was officially listed as a local breed in Guangxi and included in the *Guangxi Livestock and Poultry Breed Register*. Du'an County was once designated as a national goat-raising base county. In September 2003, it was awarded the title of “Hometown of Du'an Goats in China” by the China Brand Promotion and Protection Committee. Relevant government departments allocate special funds annually to support the conservation and selective breeding of the Du'an Goat breed. In 2005, the quality and technical supervision authorities organized the development of five comprehensive Du'an Goat standards: “DB451228/T01-2005 Du'an Goat Breed and Breeding Stock Evaluation,” “DB451228/T02-2005 Du'an Goat Breeding Technical Regulations,” “DB451228/T03-2005 Du'an Goat Feeding and Management Technical Regulations,” “DB451228/T04-2005 Du'an Goat Disease Prevention Technical Regulations,” and “DB451228/T05-2005 Du'an Goat Identification and Transport.” These were issued and implemented accordingly. In 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture allocated 1.5 million yuan to establish a Du'an Goat Conservation Farm. After careful implementation, the project was completed and put into use in April 2010. The farm currently houses 850 goats and has effectively driven the development of the Du'an Goat industry. By 2015, the total number of goats raised in the county reached 636,200.
Du'an Goats are native to Du'an Yao Autonomous County in Guangxi, and are also found in surrounding counties such as Mashan, Dahua, Bama, Donglan, Pingguo, Hechi, and Xincheng. They are a meat-type goat breed from the karst mountainous regions of southern China. The Du'an Goat breed was included in the *Guangxi Livestock and Poultry Breed Register* in 1983. Du'an County was once designated as a national goat-raising base county, and in September 2003, it was honored with the title “Hometown of Du'an Goats in China.” The meat of Du'an Goats is tender, the hides are lightweight and tough, and the breed boasts strong disease resistance and agility. They are adept at climbing steep mountains and cliffs, making them well-suited to the hot, rainy, rocky climate of southern China. Their coat colors include black, grayish, white, and black-and-white. At one year old, they weigh around 25 kilograms, while adults reach 40–50 kilograms. The dressing percentage is between 39.0% and 49.5%.

In recent years, Du'an County has successively implemented projects such as “Promotion of Goat Crossbreeding and Improvement Techniques,” “Integrated Production Increase Techniques for Lamb,” “Demonstration of Raising 10,000 Commercial Goats,” and “Demonstration of Pollution-Free Standardized Production.” The county has vigorously developed the goat industry through a “company + farmer” model, increasing funding and technical input to continuously improve both the quantity and quality of Du'an Goats. Annual goat production has reached 340,000, with 150,000 slaughtered. The goats are mainly sold to economically developed coastal cities, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asian regions.
