Shuiyoudui
Shuiyoudui
Shuiyoudui, one of the distinctive snacks of the Zhuang people. In some old streets or near schools, you can often see elderly people making them with just a stove, a pile of charcoal, a bottle of oil, a basin of flour, and a bowl of sesame seeds. In the blink of an eye, the white dough flips up and down in the boiling oil, turning from white to golden yellow, as a rich aroma wafts through the air above the street, lingering for a long time.
Besides Liuzhou’s Liujiang area, in Liuzhou city and even across Guangxi, many elderly people still make shuiyoudui by the roadside. However, this business of selling snacks for mere cents is becoming increasingly rare.
Still, many people who have left Guangxi’s picturesque mountain villages often find themselves, at some unexpected moment, thinking back to the oil-fried treats of their hometown—the smell of the fried dough is simply unlike anything found elsewhere.
