  Baical skullcap (Latin name: Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi), also known as mountain tea root or native golden tea root, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Scutellaria in the Lamiaceae family. It has thick, fleshy roots and rhizomes, stiffly papery leaves shaped lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, terminal racemes on stems and branches, flowers with purple, purplish-red to blue corollas, flat filaments, slender styles, annular stigmas, brown ovaries, and ovoid nutlets. The flowering and fruiting period is from July to September.

  Baical skullcap grows on sunny grassy slopes and fallow lands at altitudes of 60–1300 (to 1700–2000) meters. It is produced in Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Henan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Shandong, Sichuan, and other regions, and can be cultivated in most northern provinces of China. It is also distributed in Eastern Siberia (Russia), Mongolia, North Korea, and Japan. The type specimen was collected from Russia.

  The root of baical skullcap is used medicinally. It tastes bitter and has a cold nature, with effects such as clearing heat and drying dampness, purging fire and detoxifying, stopping bleeding, and calming the fetus. It is mainly used to treat febrile diseases, upper respiratory tract infections, lung heat cough, damp-heat jaundice, pneumonia, dysentery, hemoptysis, bloodshot eyes, restless fetus, hypertension, boils and abscesses, and other conditions. Baical skullcap has better clinical antibacterial properties than coptis and does not produce drug resistance.
