The Wang Mansion Eight-Eight Banquet is a culinary tradition passed down in the eastern part of Yangcheng County. It earned its name from the sixteen main dishes, which follow the principles of the “Eight Trigrams generating all things” and “good things come in pairs” from the I Ching (Book of Changes), and from the even number of eight courses served twice—hence “eight-eight.” With a long history and distinctive flavors, it is a renowned and ancient banquet celebrated far and wide.

According to ancestral tales, the Wang Mansion Eight-Eight Banquet originated during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, and has a history of more than four hundred years. It is said that when Tianguan Wang Guoguang served as Minister of Justice in the imperial court, a man surnamed Jin working in the Imperial Kitchen (the agency responsible for the emperor’s meals and royal cuisine) was falsely accused and had no means to appeal. By chance, while Guoguang was reviewing old cases, the Jin man was exonerated and his name cleared. To repay the noble official for his kindness, the Jin man regarded Guoguang as his adoptive father. In the tenth year of the Wanli era, when Guoguang retired and returned to his hometown, the Jin man accompanied him back to Shangzhuang, attended to his daily life, and adopted the surname “Wang,” settling in the village. The Jin family then combined their knowledge of imperial court cuisine with local ingredients to create this traditional and prestigious banquet, originally intended for festive celebrations and hosting local dignitaries at the Wang Mansion. Over time, as eras changed and years passed, these exquisite dishes gradually made their way into the lives of ordinary people, becoming a popular banquet choice for weddings, birthdays, and other joyous occasions to entertain relatives and friends.

The Wang Mansion Eight-Eight Banquet is highly regarded for its well-balanced ingredients, harmonious blend of sweet and savory flavors, appropriately portioned soups, excellent color, aroma, and taste, as well as high nutritional value. Its ingredients are widely available, the cooking techniques are refined, the traditional characteristics are rich, and the flavors appeal to the general public. As a result, it has remained popular for centuries and is still much loved by people today for weddings, birthdays, and celebratory events. Nowadays, it is not only the banquet of choice for joyous occasions but has also become a famous and beloved dish for gatherings among friends and for receiving guests.
