Yangxi Honey-Flavored Wampee
Honey-flavored wampee has a crisp texture like candied jujube when bitten into, but its taste is somewhat unique—sweet and tangy. The main ingredient of honey-flavored wampee is wampee fruit. Wampee is a fruit native to Yangjiang. Typically, there is sweet wampee, which is very mildly sour; sour wampee, which has a notably strong sourness; and another variety called bitter wampee, which is extremely bitter and hard to eat, but has the best medicinal properties. Sweet wampee is the most delicious, becoming even more palatable when fully ripe. Sour wampee and bitter wampee, if consumed in summer for thirst-quenching, are far more effective than sweet wampee. The sour and bitter qualities of wampee not only help stimulate saliva and relieve thirst, but also leave the throat feeling cool and refreshing, with a cooling sensation that penetrates straight through the chest and abdomen, bringing a sense of comfort. Medicinally, wampee is known to alleviate chest and abdominal distension, promote saliva production, quench thirst, regulate qi, and soothe coughs. Yangxi’s specialty, honey-flavored wampee, is produced by Yangxi County Tashan Fruit Processing Factory. In 1998, it won the “Excellent New Product” award in the Guangdong Province Light Industry “Four New” Products competition, in 1999 it received the “First-Class Gold Award” in Guangdong Province’s Food Awards, and in 2000 it was honored as the “Most Popular Product” at the Asia-Pacific Technology Expo.
