Linyi Pomegranates

Linyi pomegranates are a traditional fruit of long-standing in Shanxi, also known as "Jiang pomegranates." An average pomegranate weighing around 500 grams is already considered impressive, but in Linyi, pomegranates typically weigh around 1,000 grams. The largest can reach up to 1,750 grams, truly earning the title "King of Pomegranates." The pomegranates here are large, with thin outer skins, large seeds, soft pits, juicy flesh, and very little pulp. Each fruit has 5–7 locules, containing 650–680 seeds in one cluster, all glistening and translucent. The flavors come in three types: sweet, sweet-and-sour, and sour. When eaten, sweet pomegranates have a rich and mellow taste, sour ones are refreshingly tart, and the sweet-and-sour variety starts off sweet and then turns tangy, with a lingering aftertaste of sweetness within the sourness. Legend has it that these pomegranates were already renowned in the capital during the Ming Dynasty. The emperor once ordered locals to send large pomegranates and the sweet well water used to irrigate them to the capital every year. When you visit Linyi, pomegranate trees are visible everywhere—brilliant red blossoms in summer, and branches heavy with fruit in autumn. As the saying goes, "In May, pomegranate flowers blaze like fire; in August, pomegranates captivate the heart!" The locals even regard "pomegranates hanging from branches" as one of Linyi’s iconic sights. Linyi pomegranates are not only a nutritious and uniquely flavorful fruit, but also an effective remedy for various ailments. The fruit, leaves, flowers, peel, and roots can all be used medicinally. Mash the fruit flesh, soak it in boiling water, filter it, let it cool, and rinse your mouth with it several times a day to treat tonsillitis and oral inflammation. Dried pomegranates stored over time serve as a remedy for persistent dysentery. Dried pomegranate peel can treat enteritis, biliary tract infections, tracheitis, pneumonia, chronic appendicitis, and external wound infections, among other conditions. Today, thanks to the efforts of local people, Linyi pomegranates have seen significant development. Their bright colors and sweet taste add boundless vibrancy to people's lives. Editor: 208 (Linyi)
