Linjin Pomegranate
Linjin Pomegranate is an agricultural product with geographical indication status.
Pomegranates from Linjin have been a historic specialty of Linxi County. According to the "Records of Natural History": "During the Western Han Dynasty, Zhang Qian went on a mission to the Western Regions and brought back pomegranate seeds." Initially planted in the Lishan Palace, they later "spread across the suburbs." At that time, Linjin was known as Jie County, located near the capital and within the royal domain. Furthermore, the city's northern two-slope plateau, embraced by Mount Emei, was sheltered from wind and enjoyed abundant sunlight, with fertile soil and sweet water, making it extremely suitable for pomegranate growth. As a result, pomegranates have been cultivated in Linjin for over two thousand years. Through the passage of time and the careful selection and cultivation by generations of Linjin residents, the Linjin Pomegranate came into being. The great Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi once praised the splendid sight of Linjin Pomegranates with the elegant verse: "A riot of bloom in a row of eighteen plants, with roots counted but blossoms countless; sunlight casts blood-red drops about to fall to the ground, while wind and frost make their flames seem to scorch." First planted in the Han Dynasty and flourishing in the Tang Dynasty, during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli era, Linjin Pomegranates were honored as tributes to the imperial court. In the early years of the Republic of China, they won awards at the first Shanxi Industrial Exhibition, and in 1996, they successively claimed gold medals at both the first Shanxi Fruit Exhibition and the Beijing International Fruit and Technology Equipment Exhibition, earning high reputation nationwide. Thus, Linjin Pomegranates have forged a legacy of "Han-Tang elegance, imperial tribute, and golden accolades in an age of reform and prosperity."
Linjin Pomegranates are large in size, with an average single fruit weight of 450–650 grams, and the largest can reach up to 1860 grams. Their appearance is bright red and striking, with a thick calyx and rind, and glossy, ruby-like seeds. They have a deliciously sweet and tangy taste, rich in nutrients. According to tests conducted by Beijing Agricultural University: Linjin Pomegranates contain 79% moisture, 17% carbohydrates, 2.5% crude fiber, 17% sugars, and 0.76% organic acids.
They also provide 11 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams of seeds and are rich in minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and iron. They offer health benefits such as aiding digestion, strengthening the stomach, relieving coughs, resolving phlegm, promoting saliva production, moisturizing dryness, regulating qi, benefiting the spleen, improving eyesight, and refreshing the mind. The bark and rind of the Linjin Pomegranate contain various alkaloids that serve as insecticidal, astringent, and anti-diarrheal agents. Its leaves have a strong adsorption capacity for sulfur dioxide and mercury vapor. With lush foliage and simultaneous blooming and fruiting, they not only purify the air but are also ideal for greening factories, mines, roads, and courtyards. The people of Linjin have long favored a traditional garden layout of “front pagoda trees, rear elm trees, and central pomegranates.” The tender leaves of the pomegranate can be used to make a uniquely flavored pomegranate leaf tea, which helps clear heat and detoxify. The *Compendium of Materia Medica* states: "If pomegranate flowers are processed and taken with iron dan, white hair can turn jet-black within a year." Long regarded as a symbol of fertility and prosperity, pomegranates have become treasured fruits gifted to friends and family to celebrate holidays.
Scientific research has confirmed that drinking 100 ml of pomegranate juice daily for two weeks can slow down the oxidation process by 40% and reduce deposited oxidized cholesterol. Even after stopping consumption, this remarkable effect lasts for another month. Pomegranate juice is also a more effective antioxidant than red wine, tomato juice, and vitamin E, serving as a vital agent for eliminating cardiovascular toxins.
Additionally, the polyphenol content in pomegranate juice is much higher than that in green tea, making it a “superstar” in anti-aging and cancer prevention.
Planting Linjin Pomegranates requires low investment, is easy to manage, yields quick returns, and enjoys broad market prospects. A planting density of 110 trees per mu (approximately 0.067 hectares) with a spacing of 2 × 3 meters is recommended. Trees begin to bear fruit three years after planting, reach full production in five years, and can yield up to 1500 kg per mu, with profits exceeding 8000 yuan per mu. In 2001, a single Linjin Pomegranate sold for a record-high price of 200 yuan in Beijing.
In recent years, with the support of leaders at all levels, the people of Linjin have fully leveraged their unique geographical advantages and the industrial strengths of this historic fruit, significantly adjusting their planting structure and continuously developing pomegranate production. The county’s pomegranate cultivation area has now reached over 30,000 mu, with a total output of 45 million kg and an annual output value exceeding 80 million yuan. This has gradually formed a sunrise industry and a livelihood project that integrates base cultivation, storage and preservation, juice processing, scientific demonstration, marketing, and sightseeing tourism — all characterized by low investment and high returns.
When May arrives and the pomegranate flowers blaze like fire, and in October the fruits shine brighter than red lanterns, stepping onto the land of Sangquan to admire the charm of the pomegranates, savor their richness, appreciate their culture, and witness the beauty and nobility of these unique trees and famous fruits from across the land — you will surely be captivated and amazed. Can it not also contribute to your business success and career achievements?
