Houqiu (Monkey Head Mushroom) from Yuanqu
Houqiu (Monkey Head Mushroom) from Yuanqu: Known for their large size, glossy fuzz, varied shapes, aromatic fragrance, thick and tender flesh, freedom from insect damage, and stable color and flavor during storage. Primarily wild-grown, they can be used medicinally to treat indigestion, gastric ulcers, neurasthenia, and also show certain efficacy against malignant tumors of the digestive system such as stomach cancer.
Yuanqu County is situated in the central part of the Zhongtiao Mountain range, featuring high peaks such as Yunmeng Mountain, Shunwangping, Maxuyan, and Huangguman. Because of the abundance of Houqiu here, locals also refer to these mountains as “Houqiu Mountains.”
The Houqiu from Yuanqu is a wild fungus that grows on ancient trees in the primeval forests of Shunwangping (on Zhongtiao Mountain). Fresh Houqiu is white and turns light brown when dried. Its surface is densely covered with needle-like spines resembling monkey fur, and its shape closely resembles a monkey’s head—hence the name “Houqiu” (Monkey Head). It is a delicacy known for its delicious taste and rich nutrition. Ranking alongside bird's nest and shark fin among prized mountain and seafood delicacies, thin slices of Houqiu served with wood ear mushrooms and daylily, along with chicken broth seasoned with a blend of spices, make up the famous Houqiu Soup. It boasts a fragrant and delicious flavor, thick and tender flesh, no insect damage, glossy fuzz, long-lasting color and taste, and exceptional nutritional value. It is not only a premium dish for banquets but also a highly nourishing tonic that boosts vitality and strengthens the body.
