Almond Porridge
Almond Porridge
There are two types of almonds: bitter almonds and sweet almonds. Bitter almonds are used for medicinal purposes, while sweet almonds, though also used medicinally, are primarily consumed as food. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that sweet almonds can moisten the lungs, relieve dryness, soothe coughs, and lubricate the intestines. Almond porridge can both prevent and alleviate symptoms caused by cold and dry weather, such as dry cough without phlegm, wheezing, and constipation due to intestinal dryness. Its nutrients are also easily digested and absorbed by the human body, making it especially suitable for the elderly to consume during winter.
It contains 11% carbohydrates, as well as various nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, ascorbic acid, and amygdalin. It is particularly rich in calcium, with a content twice that of milk. Additionally, it has the highest content of the trace element selenium among all types of nuts. When combined with the vitamin E found in almonds, selenium can more effectively eliminate free radicals in the human body, helping to prevent diseases and delay aging.
Use 25 grams of sweet almonds, with skins and tips removed, 50–100 grams of glutinous rice, an appropriate amount of rock sugar, and add a suitable amount of water. First boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat until the porridge is fully cooked. Eating almond porridge can also replenish the body’s moisture and nourish overall health.
