Citrus and tea are pillar industries in Yidu. To support the development of the citrus and tea industries and promote agricultural prosperity through branding, the Yidu Administration for Industry and Commerce assisted the Yidu Citrus Association and the Panjiawan Tujia Ethnic Township Pollution-Free Natural Zinc-Rich Tea Association in applying for the registration of the collective trademarks "Yidu Tangerine" and "Yidu Natural Zinc-Rich Tea."

The terrain within the city consists of plains, hills, and mid-level mountains in a terraced distribution, higher in the southwest and lower in the northeast, with elevations ranging from 38 to 1,081 meters. Yidu Tangerine is grown at elevations between 60 and 350 meters. The cultivation area spans 15,000 hectares, with an annual yield of 234,000 tons.
Natural Ecological Environment and Humanistic Historical Factors
(1) Soil and Topography: The topography of Yidu is mainly hilly, with low and mid-level mountainous areas covering 11.7% and hills covering 79.5% of the land area. The highest elevation in the city is 1,081.8 meters, and the lowest is 38 meters. There are seven types of soil in the city: red soil, yellow soil, yellow-brown soil, limestone soil, purple soil, paddy soil, and alluvial soil, with medium loam being the predominant soil texture. The average organic matter content in the soil is 2.204%, which is moderate, and the soil pH ranges from 5.5 to 8.0, generally neutral to slightly alkaline, with no excessively acidic soil.
(2) Hydrology: Yidu has a well-developed river system and abundant surface water resources. Rivers crisscross the area, with the Yangtze River, Qingjiang River, and Yuyang River flowing through the city's citrus production areas. There are also 39 streams of varying sizes, totaling 415 kilometers in length, with a catchment area of 1,338.6 square kilometers. There are more than 10 larger lakes, such as Nanzhuangqiao, Guizi Lake, and Sanban Lake, covering a total area of about 1 square kilometer. The area enjoys abundant rainfall, with an average annual precipitation of 1,233.8 mm over many years. Rainfall coincides with the warm season, providing ample water energy and good water quality.
(3) Climate: The region has a subtropical monsoon climate, with abundant light, heat, and water resources. The climate is mild, with plentiful rainfall, sufficient sunshine, and distinct seasons. The average annual temperature is 16.7°C, the accumulated temperature above 10°C is 5,354.4°C, the annual rainfall is 1,233.8 mm, and rainfall coincides with the warm season. The frost-free period lasts 273.3 days, and the average annual sunshine duration is 1,641 hours. The geographic and climatic conditions are highly suitable for the production and development of citrus.
(4) Humanistic History: "On a spring day by the Qingjiang River, a two-acre garden is filled with thousands of tangerines. Emerald leaves shyly hide among dense foliage, while white blossoms avoid the profusion of flowers. The fruit forms as envoys arrive from the border, and the opened segments are presented near the imperial throne. They ripen after peaches and plums but before golden gates are opened." This poem, "Tangerine Garden at Hengqi," was composed on the spot by the great Tang Dynasty realist poet Du Fu when he visited the Hengqi Tangerine Garden in Yidu. The "Hengqi" mentioned in the poem is located near today’s Huamiao Dyke in Luocheng, Yidu City. In 450 AD, the book "Jingzhou Ji" by Sheng Hong recorded the existence of "Yidu Gan" (Yidu Tangerines). During the Qing Dynasty, the Yidu County Magistrate Peng Ying also wrote the elegant line, "Ten miles of yellow tangerines thrive, but how do they compare to eight hundred mulberries?" In recent years, Yidu’s citrus industry has developed rapidly, covering an area of 231,000 mu, with a yield of 240,000 tons and a total output value of 1.5 billion yuan. It has become the main source of income for farmers in the city. The municipal government has identified the citrus industry as the foremost agricultural sector and has formulated a series of policies and measures to promote its growth.
