Tanghe County has officially obtained geographical indication registration and protection for the Gardenia of Tang product from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China.

The Gardenia of Tang belongs to the Rubiaceae family and is an evergreen shrub. Its twigs are green. The leaves grow oppositely, and the plant blooms white flowers between May and July. The fruit is oval-shaped with six angular edges and ripens in October. It thrives in warm, moist climates and is relatively shade-tolerant but not cold-resistant. The gardenia’s flowers, leaves, and fruit are all aesthetically pleasing; the flowers are highly fragrant and can be used for scenting tea and extracting fragrances. The fruit can be processed into three types of natural pigments—yellow, red, and blue—which are known for their stability and strong coloring power, and are widely used in beverages, pastries, fruit wines, pharmaceuticals, and coatings. The roots, leaves, and fruit also have medicinal properties, used for clearing heat and fire, relieving restlessness, promoting urination, cooling blood, detoxifying, treating dysuria with blood, relieving eye redness and swelling, and healing fire toxin sores. Externally, they are used to treat sprains, bruises, and pain.
