Silverfish of Maji Mountain is a product with a geographical indication for agricultural products.

　　The protected area of “Silverfish of Maji Mountain” is located in Doushan Reservoir, 17 kilometers north of Junan County. The reservoir boasts abundant fish resources, including not only large silverfish but also various species such as bighead carp, silver carp, common carp, grass carp, black carp, pomfret, and crucian carp. The reservoir has consistently adhered to an ecological breeding approach of “developing fisheries through water resources and nurturing water through fisheries,” striving to establish a demonstration base for high-quality aquatic products.

　　In early 1995, the reservoir introduced fertilized eggs of large silverfish from Taihu Lake, their place of origin. By the following year, a stable population had formed. In strict accordance with the production requirements for aquatic seedlings, research on the large silverfish improved variety project was carried out, yielding significant breeding results. In 2009, it was designated as a provincial-level large silverfish improved variety farm by the Shandong Provincial Department of Ocean and Fisheries. In May 2010, the Tianhu Fishery Breeding Professional Cooperative was established, implementing “four unified managements” for all members: unified orders, unified standards, unified guidance, and unified sales. This move promoted the standardized and scaled production of large silverfish. Currently, the cooperative produces over 80 million fertilized eggs of large silverfish annually. In addition to supporting the stock enhancement and release efforts in the reservoir, it has also driven the development of large silverfish in surrounding areas.

　　The approval of this geographical indication protection certification is of great significance for increasing the added value of aquatic products, enhancing their market competitiveness, and boosting fishermen’s income. It also represents a shining milestone in the history of the city’s fisheries.
