Pingnan Younai
Pingnan Younai is a specialty of Pingnan County, Ningde City, Fujian Province. Known as the “Treasured Fruit of Eight Min Regions,” Pingnan Younai is highly popular for its unique taste and large fruit size. In 1996, it won first place in the provincial fruit competition held in Fuzhou, and that same year, Pingnan was named the “Hometown of Chinese Younai.”
Pingnan Younai is a famous, special, and high-quality fruit of Fujian Province. Pingnan County boasts superior natural ecology and geographical conditions, a long cultivation history, and strong local cultivation expertise, making it the origin and main production area of Younai. By 2003, the county’s Younai cultivation area had reached 30,000 mu. The production of Younai has become a major industry in Pingnan’s rural economy and one of the key pathways for farmers to escape poverty and achieve prosperity.
Pingnan Younai is a variety of the Prunus salicina species in the Rosaceae family. It has a peach-like shape, with large fruits weighing 80–120 grams per piece, and up to 300 grams for the largest ones. The skin is yellow-green, and the flesh is yellow, thick, tender, crisp, juicy, and sweet in flavor, indicating excellent quality. The stone is small and semi-free, often separating from the flesh at the top, forming a hollow cavity — one of the defining characteristics of Younai. Rich in nutrients, Younai offers health benefits such as clearing heat, promoting urination, nourishing the lungs, aiding digestion, and stimulating appetite and spleen function. As an outstanding representative among the fine fruits of Eight Min Regions, it is highly favored by consumers both in China and abroad.
