Liren Torreya Nuts
Liren Village in Lantian Town is a place renowned for producing Torreya nuts. Nestled at the foot of the beautiful Huangshan Mountain scenic area, the entire village is embraced by lush green hills and lies just five li from the Tunhuang Highway, with a newly paved asphalt road leading directly to the outside world. Liren’s Torreya nuts have a history of a thousand years, with some trees passed down through generations. The income from Torreya nuts serves as a major source of economic livelihood for local farmers—truly a case of “the previous generation plants the trees, the next enjoys the shade.”
Liren has been cultivating Torreya for nearly 2,000 years. The Torreya tree, also known as wild fir, grows deep in the mountains, and it’s possible that this species originated right here in these hills. People from surrounding villages envy Liren for having such fine fruit and have asked to take some back to plant in their own villages. However, the people of Liren, with their long-standing tradition of kindness and generosity, have always said, “Go ahead and dig them up to plant.” In the mountain areas of Liren, whether propagated by cuttings, layering, or root division, Torreya trees thrive and bear abundant, high-quality fruit; yet if transplanted elsewhere, they no longer produce nuts with the same authentic flavor.
Wu Wangsheng, the village chief of Liren, along with several local entrepreneurs, gathered the scattered Torreya nuts from individual households across the village. They improved processing techniques, adopted refined packaging, and built a brand presence. At the same time, they actively connected with large shopping malls, supermarkets, and wholesale markets both within and outside the province to establish unified sales channels—putting an end to the days when Liren farmers had to seek out their own distribution methods. As a result, villagers not only reaped tangible benefits but also helped elevate the reputation of Liren Torreya nuts far and wide.
Torreya nuts are a type of dried fruit known for their lung-moistening properties. Their uniqueness lies in the fact that they flower in spring of one year but are not harvested until the following year. Torreya trees are extremely hardy and easy to manage, requiring no fertilizers or pesticides, making them a purely natural green food. Liren Torreya nuts are famed throughout Huangshan City for their distinctive crispiness and fragrance. These nuts have brought substantial economic returns to the villagers of Liren and have also helped Lantian Town step out from the shadow of Huangshan and gain national recognition, becoming a beautiful highlight on the map.
