Dendrobium is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant that grows on tree trunks. Its stem is upright, tufted, yellow-green in color, with distinct nodes and longitudinal grooves, tapering at the base. The leaves are long-oval, nearly leathery, and grow on the upper part of the stem. In summer, it produces white flowers tinged with a slight purplish-red hue, arranged in a raceme. It grows on the shaded sides of rarely visited cliffs or on old pine branches in deep mountain forests, nourished year-round by morning dew and infused with the essence of moonlight. The stem is used in traditional medicine, slightly cool in nature and mildly sweet in flavor. Li Shizhen wrote in the *Compendium of Materia Medica*: “It strengthens yin and benefits essence; fortifies the stomach and intestines, replenishes internal deficiencies, regulates stomach qi, builds muscle, calms the mind and dispels fright, lightens the body and prolongs life.” Known as the “miracle grass of life-saving” in the *Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica*, wild Dendrobium officinale grows extremely rarely. Coupled with long-term unregulated harvesting, it has become critically endangered and has been listed by the State Council as a key protected wild medicinal species. The technological development and application of Dendrobium officinale have been included in the National Science Commission’s Spark Program. The cultivation of Dendrobium officinale and its factory-based production have also been listed under the “Eighth Five-Year Plan Key Spark Project” of the China Biotechnology Development Center, receiving further support.
