The “Ancient Jade Planting Site” stele is a county-level key cultural relic protection unit. It is located on the summit of Mahui Mountain, about ten li north of Yutian County. The stele stands 2.16 meters tall and is 0.8 meters wide, featuring a double-dragon carving at the top, a base at the bottom, and five recessed Chinese characters in the center of the front face that read “Ancient Jade Planting Site.” It was erected in the 28th year of the Wanli era by then-county magistrate Xu Dechang, and later re-erected in the 3rd year of the Qianlong era in April by then-county magistrate Wei Demao. Legend has it that this was the place where Yang Boyong of the Wuzhongzi State during the Spring and Autumn period planted jade, and it is also the origin of the name “Yutian” County. During the Cultural Revolution, the stele was smashed into several pieces by Red Guards. In December 1989, the county’s cultural relics department invited master craftsmen from Quyang to repair, restore, and reassemble the ancient stele. The stele was thus returned to its original site atop the mountain, regaining its former grandeur. The cultural relics authorities actively implemented the “Four Haves” management system, ensuring effective protection of the stele. In recent years, the county’s relevant departments have been actively planning the development and utilization of the surrounding environment, aiming to turn the site into a popular destination for leisure and sightseeing.
