Former Site of the French Post Office

The Former Site of the French Post Office is a protected cultural heritage site of Beijing.

An ordinary row of French-style buildings may not seem particularly remarkable at first glance, but over a hundred years ago during the semi-colonial period, this was the location of the French Post Office. After the signing of the Boxer Protocol in 1901, Dongjiaominxiang became the legation quarter for Western countries. Foreigners’ work and daily life relied heavily on postal services, so France set up a post office here to conduct postal business.

The top of the building is decorated with continuous triangular pediments along the parapet, bringing liveliness to the otherwise plain low-rise structure. Six continuous arched windows are also quite eye-catching. Standing here, it’s not hard to imagine the scenes of people queuing up at the counter to handle various postal procedures in the past.
