Islamic Style Street

Islamic Style Street is located in the Huimin District of Hohhot, which covers a total area of 175 square kilometers. The silver coins of the Persian Sassanian Dynasty unearthed by archaeologists in Bakaizi Village, Hohhot, were the currency brought to China by Persian and Arab merchants at that time. In addition, due to the relatively concentrated settlement of the Hui ethnic group in this area, a certain scale of Hui economic, cultural, and historical atmosphere has been formed, hence the name of the Huimin District. In 1950, with the approval of the Central People's Government, the Hui Autonomous Region of Guisui City was officially established, becoming the first Hui autonomous region among China’s municipal districts. It was renamed the Huimin District of Hohhot in 1956. On May 14, 2000, the State Council (State Letter [2000] No. 42) approved the adjustment of the administrative divisions of the municipal districts of Hohhot, defining the current administrative scope of the Huimin District as comprising seven streets and one town. The Huimin District has become one of the important economic and cultural centers of Hohhot.

Walking along Islamic Style Street, you’ll be greeted by hues dominated by desert yellow interwoven with green and white, rows of pointed arch windows lined up side by side, and grand, full-bodied spherical domes—offering a deep immersion into the rich Islamic ambiance. Heading west out of Zhongshan West Road leads you to the Islamic Architectural Characteristic Scenic Street in the Huimin District. This 1,150-meter-long street on Tongdao South Road in the Huimin District features a total investment of 65 million yuan. Planned and designed by the American L&A Group, construction began in May 2006 and was fully completed in July of the same year. It serves as an important north-south transportation artery running through the heart of the city. The area is home to a concentrated Hui population, features a dense collection of Islamic-style architecture, and thrives with Muslim commerce. Especially due to its centuries-old deep-rooted Islamic culture, the street exudes a strong Islamic atmosphere. Strolling along the Islamic Architectural Characteristic Scenic Street, you’ll find magnificent high-rises adorned with layered corbel arches, domes, and colorful glazed bricks. The full-bodied green or yellow spherical domes, towering columnar towers, and the dominant desert yellow tones all contribute to an immersive experience of Islamic style.
